AFTER EFFECTS OF HARVEST FESTIVAL

He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.                                  - Immanuel Kant

Welcome back to What's around us, I anticipate that everyone are contended after lohri/ sankranthi festival. Although the festival brings us lots of happiness and joy to humankind but it is not actually the same with our fellow mates who are sharing the same environment.

Sankranthi is a festival celebrated throughout the India, it has vivid customs practiced uniquely in different places. Flying kites, exchanging sweets, harvesting the yeild, taking a holy dip in sacred rivers are some of the usual customs. In addition to this, there are some practices which could harm the environment and the living organisms habited. I will spill out what just happened in Karighatta, Srirangapatana after celebrating the festival on 14 January 2019.

Karighatta is a hilly place nearby Srirangapatana, it is home for dry scrub jungle and many trees bearing local fruits. Many colourful birds visit the place often and I have spotted the Asiatic palm swift and swallows many a times there. Every year this mighty jungle is facing a threat from devotees. During this festival, a few devotees have a practice of sacrificing ash from the jungle to their deity. Due to this they are supposed to ignite some firewoods in the place, this is leading to the Forest fire everytime.

The forest fire damages the health of an ecosystem and alters the functioning in a considerable amount. It is also a cause for air pollution and bringing forth the ill effects to mankind.

The localites, nature lovers and visitors have managed to turn off the wild fire that day. It is my humble request to everyone that celebrating a festival is a good thing, practicing the customs and traditions shows our dedications; in addition to this, preserving our environment for the future generations is a holy deed either.

Please do help in saving our environment for our future generations.
